Sea Monitoring

In collaboration with the National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics) (OGS) of Trieste we are performing some sea monitoring activities:

Mnemiopsisleidyi
  • Monitoring of alien species: in the waters of the Gulf of Trieste, numerous gelatinous organisms have appeared; they belong to the species Mnemiopsisleidyi (also known as sea walnut). They compete for food (zooplankton) with planktivorous fish species of commercial interest (i.e., anchovies and sardines) and simultaneously they prey on the eggs and larvae of these fishes, as well as the larvae of bivalve molluscs (e.g., clams and mussels). They are also harmful to some specific fishing systems of the upper Adriatic lagoons, as they mechanically occlude them, hindering their operation.
  • Monitoring of O2, PH, Salinity, temperature in the waters of the Gulf of Trieste.
