Unmanned Autonomous Catamaran for Environmental Monitoring Tested at Sea

On Thursday 06 March 2025, the laboratory went to Panzano Bagni to carry out the first sea test of the new catamaran, based on a BlueRobotics BlueBoat.
The catamaran has two computers, one for autonomous navigation and one for data acquisition.

Data collection is carried out by the following systems:

  • Two Micasense Red-Edge MX Dual multispectral cameras, to photograph the seaweed meadows in the Adriatic Sea
  • An IDRONAUT Ocean Seven 310 probe, to acquire chemical-physical parameters of the water, including pH, dissolved oxygen and salinity.

The catamaran is being developed within the Interreg Italy-Croatia BRIGANTINE project for environmental monitoring of the Adriatic Sea, more information on the project is available here. The goal of the catamaran is to be able to monitor the seaweed meadows in complete autonomy, while an operator on the boat can analyze the acquired data.
